Takeaway coffee cups may be banned by 2023

According to an Australian Senate inquiry, single-use plastics such as coffee cups with plastic linings, could be banned by 2023. The Senate Environment and Communications References Committee, Never waste a crisis: the waste and recycling industry in Australia, was released this week, detailing 18 recommendations and a full report on ways to reduce landfill and improve the quality of recycling. The inquiry into Australian’s recycling crisis has also recommended the ban on takeaway containers and chip packets.

New minimum wage takes effect from Sunday

The Fair Work Ombudsman is calling on businesses to check the new minimum pay rates that apply ahead of a new national minimum wage coming into effect from 1 July, 2018. From this date, the national minimum wage will increase to $719.20 per week, or $18.93 per hour. The base rates of pay in modern awards will also increase.

Country of origin food labelling surveillance to commence 1 July

From 1 July, Australian consumers will have much greater certainty about the origins of the food they buy due to the introduction of mandatory Country of Origin food labelling.  The Australian Competitor and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will conduct market surveillance checks on 10,000 food products to ensure businesses are correctly displaying the new labels.

Australia to host seven regional AeroPress competitions

Event organisers have announced seven regional AeroPress competitions will take place across the country and conclude with the national championship in Melbourne on 19 September.   The first regional event will start on 27 July in Canberra at Red Brick Espresso and end in Perth at Laika Coffee Roasters & Micrology Coffee Roasters on 9 September.  “It was a tough decision this year, as we received a resounding amount of interest to host events in Australia, but we have our final list. World Animal Protection investigates civet cat cruelty in Bali

A new report from World Animal Protection has found demand for the world’s most expensive coffee is continuing to keep civet cats captive in cruel conditions.  Civet coffee, or Kopi Luwak as it is also known in Indonesia, is produced across the island of Bali, by civets, who are poached from the wild and kept in cramped cages to produce gourmet coffee for visiting tourists. A research team from World Animal Protection recently visited 13 of the suspected 30 to 40 Kopi Luwak venues to assess the welfare of the 80 captive civets.
