World Coffee Events announces changes to WLAC and CIGS Championships

The World Coffee Events (WCE) Rules and Regulations Committee has launched the 2018 Rules and Regulations for the World Latte Art Championship (WLAC) and World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (WCIGS). Changes this year have focused on the WLAC. The Art Bar portion of the Preliminary Round has been streamlined to focus on core bar skills, and as a result will have reduced competing time.

Judge rules coffee sold in California must carry cancer warnings

A Los Angeles Judge has affirmed the decision that coffee sold in California must carry cancer warnings. A Superior court, Judge Elihu Berle, ruled on 7 May that Starbucks and other roasters and retailers had failed to show that benefits from drinking coffee outweighed any risks from a carcinogen, a byproduct of the roasting process.

Federal Government’s budget boost to small businesses

The 2018-19 Federal Budget will aim to improve the business operating environment for small businesses in the café, restaurant and catering sector with an extension of the Government’s instant asset write off program to 30 June, 2019. The extension will enable small businesses with an annual turnover of up to $10 million to immediately deduct eligible assets, each costing less than $20,000.

Communities in NSW embrace ‘coffee with a cop’ initiative

Local communities across the state were encouraged to drop in for a coffee with their local cops on May 8 to help strengthen relationships and learn about the important work officers do to keep people safe.  Minister for Police Troy Grant said people usually only seek out police when they are a victim or a witness of crime and they are at their most vulnerable – not ideal times to build relationships.
